06/17/06 - The Homeland Security Department announced that Florida is
the only state to meet all of the basic requirements for catastrophe
planning. Nine states were rated as “sufficient”, others are far from ready
for the worst to happen.
The ratings are based on a complicated system that considers
evacuation plans, medical care, public disaster notification procedures,
shelters, and other factors.
Governor Jeb Bush, the brother of the President, responded to the
announcement by saying that "We've spent a lot of time and resources on
preparation. The benefit of being prepared for hurricanes is that we're
prepared for a pandemic a little better, we're prepared for a terrorist
attack. All hazards come into play. I'm not surprised that we are maybe
better prepared than others, but having said that, I think we should be
even better prepared."
