08/15/06 - The statewide Alligator Harvest Program begins today.  The
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued 4,406
permits to 2,155 hunters in less than four hours on June 15, in spite of a
computer glitch that caused an outage in the middle of the process.

The hunt, part of the Commission's program to control the state's
population of about two million gators, would result in 8,812 kills if all
permits are used to the fullest.  Perhaps realizing that this doesn't make
a real dent in the population, the FWC also encourages residents to be
aware that they may encounter the critters at any time and to avoid them
when possible.  Among their many publications is a helpful brochure,
"Living with Alligators".
