09/03/06 - The era of Spring Break crowds overwhelming Fort
Lauderdale's beaches is long gone, as are most of the watering holes
that catered to the unkempt masses yearning to breathe free. Now one
remaining survivor of that era -- the bar immortalized in the classic movie
"Where The Boys Are", is shooting to become truly immortal. Yes, the
Elbo Room is a candidate for historic landmark status.
The movement, led by a group of former bar employees from the glory
days who call themselves Sons of the Beach, has the support of the Fort
Lauderdale Historical Society and the Broward Trust for Historical
Preservation. They now have to convince the Fort Lauderdale City
Commission, which has more or less disowned the city's old Spring
Break tradition as it strives for a more cultivated class of visitors.
