09/29/06 - Representative Mark Foley, R-Fla, abruptly resigned his office
today amid revelations that he had inappropriately engaged in raunchy
e-mail and instant message exchanges with current and former
congressional pages, all male..
In one instant message, Foley said, "Do I make you a little horny?". In
another, he wrote, "You in your boxers, too? ... Well, strip down and get
relaxed.".
Foley, who is single, said in his resignation letter that he was "deeply
sorry" and "I apologize for letting down my family and the people of
Florida." Adding to the irony in this scandal is the fact that the
congressman is chairman of the House caucus on missing and
exploited children.
With only six weeks before the midterm election, Republicans must now
scramble for a replacement candidate as the scandal unfolds.
