05/25/06 - Fort Lauderdale. The mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Jim Naugle,
has astounded and amazed residents with his comments regarding the
supposed "housing crisis" in Broward County, where home prices have
soared at double-digit percentage increases in the past few years. Mr.
Naugle doesn't see the high home prices as much of a problem, unless
people are stuck on a 40-hour week and a single-family home.
"In my city, we have plenty of housing available at a good price.", he
replied to one citizen who emailed him. The median price for a condo
was only $202,000 in March, he noted.
"What I said was, Why should a guy that is working 60 hours a week pay
more, so that some schlock working 40 and sitting on the sofa drinking
beer can pay less? I stand by my comments. It is not fair and is not
American."
