02/06/07 - Lisa Marie Nowak, a Navy Captain and NASA astronaut, was
charged with attempted kidnapping, attempted murder, battery, and other
charges in an Orlando courtroom today. The charges stem from an
alleged attack on Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman in a parking lot of
Orlando International Airport the previous day.
According to Shipman, Nowak followed her from the airport terminal to
the satellite parking lot where Shipman had her car. As Shipman tried to
drive away, Nowak pounded on the window. According to Shipman, "I
opened my window about 2 [inches] and she sprayed me with a mace or
pepper spray. I threw the car in gear and drove to the parking office,
where we called the police." She said the spray burned her "head, face,
eyes, nose and left hand and forearm."
Nowak apparently drove non-stop from Houston to confront Shipman,
wearing diapers so she wouldn't have to make pit stops along the way.
